Technical Guide2025-11-01
When choosing LED headlights, waterproof rating is critical for long-term reliability. Here's what IP68 means and why SickLight products exceed standard requirements.
Understanding IP Ratings
The IP (Ingress Protection) code consists of two digits:
- First digit (6): Dust protection - "Dust tight" (no dust ingress)
- Second digit (8): Water protection - "Continuous immersion beyond 1m"
IP68 Test Requirements
Standard IP68 testing requires:
- Submersion in water at 1 meter depth
- Duration of at least 30 minutes
- No water ingress affecting operation
SickLight's Enhanced Testing
We go beyond standard IP68 requirements:
- Depth: Tested at 3 meters (3x standard)
- Duration: 2-hour continuous submersion
- Temperature Cycling: Hot/cold water alternation
- Pressure Testing: Simulates high-speed water spray
- Salt Water: Corrosion resistance verification
Why It Matters
Your headlights face harsh conditions:
- Rain and road spray at highway speeds
- Snow and ice buildup
- Car wash pressure jets
- Puddle submersion
- Temperature fluctuations causing condensation
Sealing Technology
SickLight products use multiple sealing methods:
- Silicone O-ring seals at all joints
- Waterproof cable glands
- Sealed driver housing
- Hydrophobic coating on heat sink
